Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd had 266 store cattle forward at their March sale in Newton Stewart on Friday when grazing cattle were still easy to sell, although short-keep cattle were slightly harder to cash. Eighty-two heifers sold to a top of £1010 per head and 265.5p per kg to average £704.73 and 202.4p, while 153 beef-bred bullocks peaked at £1170 and 277.6p to level at £815.76 and 212.3p. Thirty-one B&W bullocks averaged £533.72 and 121.3p.
C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their fortnightly sale of store cattle in Dumfries yesterday when trade reflected the downward trend of prime cattle. Eighty-six heifers sold to a top of 221.1p and an average of 195.4p (+1.4p on the fortnight), while 99 beef-bred bullocks peaked at 250.8p and levelled at 204.3p (-6.4p). Thirty-two B&W bullocks sold to 136.1p and averaged 120.1p.
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 53 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 270p and an average of 212p (+23p on the week), while 31 prime bullocks peaked at 239p and levelled at 201.8p 9+10.8p).
In the rough ring 45 beef cows average 112p (no change).
There were also 2136 prime hoggs that sold to £110 per head and 216p per kg to average £83 and 182.5p (-8p).
The 424 cast sheep forward saw heavy ewes sell to £110 for Texels and average £81, while light ewes peaked at £86 for Cheviots and levelled at £51.
The firm also sold 28 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 259.5p and an average of 195.1p (+14.3p), while 32 prime bullocks peaked at 215.5p and levelled at 182.7p (-9.3p). Twenty-six prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 206.5p and averaged 181.3p (+10.4p), while 39 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 162.5p and levelled at 135.5p (+2.7p).
In the rough ring 89 beef cows averaged 133p (+5.5p) and 172 dairy cows levelled at 87p (+4.3p). Fifteen bulls averaged 124p (+11p).
There were also 1905 prime hoggs that sold to £113.80 and 253.5p to average 187.6p (-10.3p).
A small show of 110 cast sheep saw ewes sell to £88.50 for Texels.
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 13 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 252p and an average of 232p (+15p), while 20 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 209p and levelled at 192.2p (+4.2p). Nine prime, B&W bullocks sold to 136p and averaged 130.2p (+11.7p).
In the rough ring 34 beef cows averaged 118p (+0.5p) and 50 dairy cows levelled at 89.5p (+2.4p).
The firm also sold 3217 prime hoggs to a top of £112.50 and 273.8p to average 189.8p (-1.9p).
