Market round-up
Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd had 1470 prime lambs forward at Ayr yesterday, when the smaller show led to all classes meeting a sharper trade on the week, especially export-types which were easily cashed. Top prices on the day were £100 per head and 207.9p per kg, with the final average levelling at 185.1p (+5.1p on the week).
The firm also had 709 cast sheep forward when rams sold to £126 for a pen of Texels and ewes peaked at £124 for a pen of Beltex and £85.50 for Blackfaces, with the overall average levelling at £71.86 (+£3.86).
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 8 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 209.5p per kg and an average of 183.2p (-8.3p), while 6 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 212.5p and levelled at 197.2p (+4.7p). Thirteen prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 229.5p and averaged 181.4p (+5.6p), while 12 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 179.5p and levelled at 156.2p (+16.4p).
In the rough ring 24 beef cows averaged 104.1p (-17.8p) and 92 dairy cows levelled at 79p (-6.2p). Two bulls averaged 100p (-6.5p).
The firm also sold 3056 prime lambs to a top of £116.50 and 294.2p to average 200.3p (+7.4p).
A small show of 56 cast ewes sold to £119.50 for Texels and £59.50 for Swaledales.
John Swan Ltd sold 35 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to a top of 252p and an average of 225.2p (+7.2p), while 28 prime bullocks peaked at 249p and levelled at 220.3p (+3.5p). Eleven prime bulls sold to 220p and averaged 170p.
In the rough ring 26 beef-type OTM cattle averaged 118.7p (+2.9p).
The firm also sold 1947 prime lambs to a top of £99 and 242.3p to average £79.21 and 190.2p (+3.2p).
The 703 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £128 for Suffolks and average £71.26 (-88p).
Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 26 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 249p and an average of 230.4p (+2.8p), while 5 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 230p and levelled at 214.2p (+0.4p). Five prime, B&W bullocks sold to 168p and averaged 152.8p (+5.2p).
In the rough ring 8 beef cows averaged 124.1p (+6.8p) and 8 dairy cows levelled at 79p (-10.4p).
The firm also sold 1770 prime lambs to a top of £96.50 and 219.3p to average 187.3p (+1.4p).
The 465 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £150.50 for a Texel and £78.50 for Blackfaces to average £70.90 overall (-£8.68).
There were also 8 dairy cattle that sold to £1780 for a Brown Swiss and averaged £1473.
