WALLETS Marts sold 3,041 Blackface ewe lambs at their annual sale in Castle Douglas on Monday to a top of £132 per head for a pen from JW Kay, Gass Farm, and an average of £81.87 (+£7.91 on the year).

The firm also had 221 store cattle forward when heifers sold to 242.9 pence per kilogramme and averaged 204.1p (+3.8p on the fortnight), while bullocks peaked at 257.2p and levelled at 218.2p (-2.8p).

United Auctions had a catalogued entry of 10,332 breeding sheep at their annual show and sale of Scotch Mule and Blackface ewe lambs at Stirling on Monday.

There was a new centre record of £170 per head, which was set with a pen of 24 Scotch Mule ewe lambs consigned by D Gray, Drumnessie, while the Blackface section was topped at £165 by a pen of 20 from Messrs HA Blackwood, Auldhouseburn.

The overall averages were: Accredited Scotch Mule ewe lambs £97.73 (+£2.92 on the year); Non-acc Scotch Mule ewe lambs £91.94 (+£2.14); Acc Blackface ewe lambs £71.90 (-66p); non-acc Blackface ewe lambs £58.62 (-£15.61).

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 2,673 prime lambs at Ayr on Monday to a top of £100 per head and 200p per kg to average 150.2p (-8.8p on the week).

There was another large show of 839 cast sheep, which saw ewes sell to £105 for Texels and £66.50 for Blackfaces.

Separately, Lawrie & Symington Ltd sold 13 prime heifers in Lanark on Monday to a top of 246p and an average of 229.1p (+8.2p on the week).

Meanwhile 13 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 227p and levelled at 202.4p (+0.9p).

Eleven prime, B&W bullocks sold to 142p and averaged 141.2p (-3.2p).

Over in the rough ring, meanwhile, 18 beef cows averaged 137p (+19p) and 35 dairy cows levelled at 89p (-15p).

Eleven OTM cattle averaged 87p (-10p).

Along with that, the firm also sold 3,430 prime lambs to a top of £85.50 and 203.6p to average 154.9p (-9.9p).

The 915 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £120.50 for Texels and £64.50 for Blackfaces. The firm went on to sell 5,100 breeding sheep and store lambs at the same venue yesterday.

The top prices and averages were: Scotch Mule gimmers to £176 per head for the champion pen from RJ Fry, Porterstown, Keir, Thornhill, and averaged £145.80 (+£2.75 on the year) for 1022; Scotch Mule ewe lambs to £136 for the champion pen off Messrs Stewart, Crookboat, Sandilands and averaged £103.60 (-£6.62) for 1411; Texel gimmers £148 and £126.47 (+£1.64) for 342.
