Wallets Marts had 248 store cattle forward at their fortnightly sale in Castle Douglas yesterday when many were showing the adverse effects of the recent rougher weather.
There were 108 heifers that sold to a top of 244.4p per kg and an average of 201p, while 140 bullocks peaked at 259.3p and levelled at 218.5p.
Harrison & Hetherington Ltd sold 14 prime heifers in Carlisle yesterday to a top of 247.5p per kg and an average of 215.4p (+32p on the week), while 18 prime bullocks peaked at 233.5p and levelled at 200.7p (+6.3p).
Thirty-nine prime, beef-bred bulls sold to 228.8p and averaged 187.6p (+3.7p), while 42 prime, dairy-bred bulls peaked at 174.5p and levelled at 148.6p (-0.6p).
In the rough ring 120 beef cows averaged 113.7p (-13.5p) and 147 dairy cows levelled at 85.7p (+7.5p). Eight bulls averaged 102.4p (+6.7p).
The firm also sold 2,436 prime lambs to £142 per head and 315.6p per kg to average 166.8p (+8.2p).
The 182 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £91.50 for Texels and £59.50 for Hill Cheviots.
John Swan Ltd sold 47 prime heifers in St Boswells yesterday to 242p and an average of 216.4p (-0.6p), while 21 prime bullocks peaked at 245p and levelled at 218.4p (-2.6p).
In the rough ring 61 beef-type OTM cattle averaged 124p (-0.9p).
The firm also sold 3,454 prime lambs to £92 and 215.3p to average 155.7p (-3.3p).The 625 cast sheep forward averaged £52 (-£1.65).
Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd had 2,415 prime lambs forward at Ayr yesterday when nearly half of them weighed more than 45kg which led to the overall average price being lower than expected. Top prices on the day were £82 and 175.1p with the final average levelling at 150.2p (+1.3p).
There were also 704 cast sheep forward when all classes were sharper on the week with ewes selling to £110 for a pen of Texels and £67 for Blackfaces with the overall average levelling at £54.84 (+£1.89).
Lawrie and Symington Ltd sold 24 prime heifers in Lanark yesterday to a top of 255p and an average of 226p (-4.8p), while 15 prime, beef-bred bullocks peaked at 217.5p and levelled at 209.7p (-3.2p). Eight prime, B&W bullocks sold to 150p and averaged 140.6p (+0.4p).
In the rough ring 47 beef cows averaged 115.6p (-1.4p) and 29 dairy cows levelled at 71.8p (-9p). Ten OTM cattle averaged 137p (-10p).
The firm also sold 2,273 prime lambs to £90.50 and 210.5p to average 155.8p (+4.1p).
The 915 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £120.50 for a Texel and £67.50 for Blackfaces to average £60.04 overall (+£4.42).
