RENEWABLE energy companies in Scotland are being encouraged to join a trade mission to explore opportunities in the Mongolian economy.

The trip is being organised through the UK government and the Mongolian British Chamber of Commerce.

Much of Mongolia's economic progress is coming from its vast mineral resources but its first wind energy plant is to open soon and many yurts now have solar panels.

Glasgow firm Sgurr Energy is already working on a wind farm project at Salkhit in Mongolia.

David Scott, Mongolian Honorary Consul in Scotland, has helped organise the trade mission between June 2 and 9, coinciding with the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator hosting the United Nations' World Environment Day on June 5.

Mr Scott said: "Scotland leads the world in many areas of renewable energy and there are huge business opportunities in Mongolia.

"The trade mission will give companies working in these fields the opportunity to showcase their technology and knowledge to an eager marketplace."

A UK government spokesman said: "An extremely varied landscape has blessed Mongolia with a valuable stock of solar and wind power sourced from the second-largest desert in the world – the Gobi."
