THE brewery behind Scotland’s best selling lager is bidding to become a major tourism draw.

Tennent Caledonian, the maker of Tennent’s Lager, has launched a £1 million project to turn its historic Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow’s east end into a five-star tourist attraction.

Under plans submitted to Glasgow City Council, the brewer aims to bring Tennent’s 500-year story to life, highlighting its role in Scottish history, culture and sport since it brewed its first drops in 1556.

It is hoped The Tennent’s Story will be ready to open in autumn 2017.

Wellpark already has an established visitor centre, attracting thousands of beer fans every year. Now the brewer wants to take its tours to a new level.

Managing director Andrea Pozzi said: “This is a hugely exciting time for Tennent’s and this announcement is another significant investment in the future of our business and the Wellpark site.

“The plans we’ve put in place will transform our current visitor centre into one of Scotland’s premier tourist destinations. We can’t wait to get started.

“Since 1556, Tennent’s has been part of Scotland’s cultural history and we have an incredible story to tell. The current visitor centre attracts more than 15,000 local and international tourists every year, and we look forward to welcoming even more people through our doors.”

Tennent’s has commissioned The Creative Cell to lead the project, alongside The School of Simulation and Visualisation at The Glasgow School of Art and ZM Architecture.
