SCOTCH whisky chief Billy Walker has unveiled the first bottling from the Speyside distillery he acquired as part of a consortium from French giant Pernod Ricard last summer.

Mr Walker will release a 50th anniversary limited edition collection of the GlenAllachie single malt as his debut launch from the distillery after carefully assessing its 40,000 casks of whisky stock since completing the acquisition. That led him to select six casks from the distillery’s maiden production run from February 17, 1968.

More than 3,500 50cl bottles of the spirit have been filled for the release, 2,391 of which will got to general export. Some 720 will be sold in the UK and 425 in Taiwan, with all of the spirit bottled at cask strength. It is expected that retail prices will range from £200 to £699. The full GlenAllachie range will be launched in June.

Mr Walker, who acquired the distillery with former BenRiach colleague Tricia Savage and ex-Inver House Distillers’ boss Graham Stevenson, said: “What’s particularly exciting about these special-edition single cask bottles is that we’ll be able to demonstrate the really high quality of GlenAllachie as a standalone whisky. Discovering these hidden gems in the warehouses has given us a great opportunity, not only to give whisky connoisseurs a taste of what’s to come, but also to celebrate the half century since this very special distillery first fired up its stills.”
