OIL major BP has fired the starting gun on a $16 billion (£12 billion) gas extraction project in Oman.

The site is the largest BP project to get under way this year, with 200 wells being operated across the Khazzan gas field. The firm expects to launch seven upstream projects in 2017. The sites will help reach its target of adding 800,000 barrels of oil and gas per day from new projects by 2020.

Group chief executive Bob Dudley said: "The start of production from Khazzan, BP's sixth and largest major project start-up so far this year, is an important milestone in our strategic partnership with Oman.

"With further development already planned, this giant field has the potential to produce gas for Oman for decades to come."

Over the two phases of the Khazzan project, the firm will drill about 300 wells. BP is operating the site in partnership with the Oman Oil Company Exploration and Production.
