Labour has called on Margaret Thatcher to apologise for her policies as she visited Scotland to mark the 30th anniversary of her coming to power.

But the Tories said Labour should get into the 21st century and say sorry for the current recession.

The former prime minister, now a Baroness, was attending a dinner in Glasgow as part of the events to mark the 30th anniversary of her coming to power.

But Labour's Glasgow Baillieston MSP Margaret Curran said: "Margaret Thatcher should apologise to Glasgow for her policies that wreaked havoc on our city.

"The constituency I represent is still trying to recover from the destruction that ensued from her plans and political approach.

"This is the woman that closed down our shipyards and steel mills, believed that unemployment was a price worth paying, and then told us that she knew best."

She also attacked the party for using Scotland as a "guinea pig" for the poll tax.

A spokesman for the Conservatives said: "The Labour Party needs to drag itself into the 21st century and start apologising to the people of Scotland and Britain for the depth of the recession it's created."
