Poor old Knight's Peak in the Cuillin hills on Skye just does not measure up.

After many years as a Munro Top, it has been stripped of its status after being found to fall short by six very important inches.

What's half a foot to a mountain, you may ask. It's everything, frankly, thanks to Sir Hugh Munro, the mountaineer who originally designated Scotland's mountains of over 3000ft and took accuracy very seriously. He would no doubt have agreed that Shorty had to go. There is an alternative for lesser peaks, in any case, a Second Division to the Munros' First, otherwise known as Corbetts (mountains of between 2500 and 3000ft). However, as a subsidiary peak of a Munro, Knight's Peak will almost certainly not qualify.

Size isn't everything, of course. Knight's Peak is still a splendid mountain, a proper crag in the clouds, and will probably have more visitors than ever now that it has become so famous.

With just a teensy bit of help, though, it could regain its title. When Nicolas Sarkozy and Tom Cruise want to look taller, they wear Cuban heels. Lady Gaga wears platforms. All Knight's Peak needs is a traffic cone.
