WHAT do Ian Fleming and Robert Louis Stevenson have in common?

They were, of course, both highly successful authors with a connection to exotic climes. Each created fictional characters who went on to gain celluloid immortality. And they could soon have another link - one also shared with Louis Armstrong and George Best, among others - if a campaign spearhead by actor Nigel Planer comes to fruition.

Fleming has an international airport in Jamaica named after him; the two just mentioned have been accorded that honour by New Orleans and Belfast respectively. Now there are moves to have Edinburgh Airport named after Scotland's great man of letters.

RLS himself would probably not have thanked you for the honour, and the proposal may not be the most practical: Robert Louis Stevenson International Airport does not readily trip off the tongue, nor it does it fit easily on to a baggage label.

This debate, though, is welcome, as it will focus attention on the great man's works. Whatever the outcome, we hope it helps his popularity soar, both in the land of his birth and beyond.
