Going through a bad spell

OUR story of the driver who couldn't spell "yacht" reminds Robert McMillan in Paisley of the apprentice in the factory where he worked doing a crossword at lunchtime and asking how you spelled "yacht".

Says Robert: "The comedian of a tradesman, who had been in the Merchant Navy, and knew all things nautical, answered 'y-o-t'. The apprentice said it didn't fit so was then told 'y-o-t-t', then 'y-a-u-t', then 'y-a-w-t'.
