I was interested to read that a new monument dedicated to William Wallace is to be built on a location outside Glasgow Cathedral agreed by the City Council ("New William Wallace memorial in Glasgow", The Herald, May 4).

On reading further, I was appalled to learn that this so-called monument was in fact to be a cut-out of Wallace which visitors can stand beside to have their photograph taken.

Tell me, what is a "cut-out" monument?

Will it be faceless, like something that would be more appropriate in a funfair?

This type of attraction has its place but not in the historic surroundings of Glasgow Cathedral, an area beloved of Glaswegians and visitors alike.

The memorial cairn suggested by the Society of William Wallace would have been more in keeping but was rejected by the council.

I fear there are shades of the George Square fiasco here.
