IT is good that the new South Glasgow Hospital has been completed on time and, unlike all too many present and recent major projects, within budget.

The previews of the interior suggest that it will be a huge improvement on some of the existing hospitals which it will replace and will benefit patients and staff alike.

What is less welcome is the likelihood of enormous difficulties of access and parking for staff, patients, visitors and, of particular concern, emergency crew.

The lack of adequate parking will also create problems for nearby residents.

The time and costs associated in accessing the hospital should not be underestimated and will have a major impact on all concerned.

It is easy to understand why a helicopter landing pad has been incorporated into the design of the hospital as it would seem that this will soon be the only way which one can be assured of reaching the hospital in time and of being able to touch base.

The recent experience of Alan Stephen (Letters February 4) is, regrettably, unlikely to be an isolated one.
