I READ with interest the Moderator of the General Assembly's comments on John Knox ("Knox would not approve of me, says Moderator", The Herald, September 4, and Letters, September 5).

Knox has been and continues to be described as some kind of misogynist, largely because of the authorship of "the first blast of the trumpet against the monstrous regiment of women", referred to in the article mentioned above.

I believe it is worth pointing out that there is a school of thought that Knox's target in the blast was specifically Mary Tudor, as representing the government, or regiment, in England and not the mass of womankind in general. And we should not overlook that he married on two occasions, the second time to a young woman of 16. He did not appear, therefore, to be immune to the attractions of the fair sex.
