THIS week the Labour Party in Westminster put forward a motion to abolish the bedroom tax (having refused to support a similar previous motion from the SNP last February). The motion failed by 26 votes.

One-quarter of Labour MPs didn't bother to support their own party's motion. Familiar names among the missing Labour MPs included Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling and Jim Murphy.

The ultimate hypocrisy award must go to Glasgow MP Anas Sarwar. Only a few weeks ago in a TV debate with Nicola Sturgeon he waved a copy of a bill to abolish the tax, challenged her to sign it and demanded that the Scottish Government divert more money from Scottish expenditure in order to mitigate its effects. Why was he absent from the vote in London which might have brought an end to the tax?
