I UNDERSTAND the desire for the national tennis centre of excellence planned for Dunblane but hope we don't have to wait another 70-plus years for a tennis champion.

In 1980 I was in Switzerland and amazed at the provision of outdoor and indoor tennis courts in every village, it seemed.

I was convinced that tennis champions would follow and of course they have, the latest being Stanislas Wawrinka, pictured.

These were not private clubs (of which we have many in populated areas) but local amenities available to all.

If we wish to succeed at tennis (or any other sport for that matter) there is a requirement to make facilities plentiful and low-cost rather than private, exclusive and costly.
