Forty years ago we were told Scotland couldn't be an independent country because there was only 15 years' worth of oil in the North Sea (North Sea oil:

'There ARE 24bn barrels left', August 24). We should reflect on what we would have missed if Scotland had reclaimed its independence decades ago: Mrs Thatcher, the Poll Tax, Tory Governments we never voted for, the Iraq War, a Tory/LibDem government we never voted for, the age of austerity, the bedroom tax. Same old Westminster, same old con.
