Dr Ken Brown highlights the stupidity of the UK's energy policy but especially that of the Scottish Government (Letters, September 14).

Britain is heading into winter with fewer gas reserves than last year.

Scottish politicians are delusional, expecting wind turbines to satisfy our needs when they intend to close all coal-fired plants and ban nuclear.

Other nations are actively tackling their energy problems. Estonia is the world's first country to meet all its power needs from shale. Lithuania has given Chevron the go-ahead to explore for shale gas. The Spanish Government has decided to help companies exploring for shale gas under the Iberian Peninsula by giving them legal protection. The Dutch government has just released a report finding that any environmental risks of fracking can be managed, thus opening a previously closed-door policy.

Vladimir Putin's Russia and Gazprom have a stranglehold on gas supplies. Fracking in Europe will counter that threat since the potential shale gas basins in Europe are enormous.

Even the EU Energy Commissioner says Europe should abandon climate policy and develop shale.

What are we waiting for?
