Value of the press

THE recommendations of the Leveson Inquiry will now be debated but, lest we forget, the phone tapping scandal was uncovered by a newspaper; not the police, not the politicians, not parliament, not the internet, the courts or anyone else.

To paraphrase Churchill, democratic government is not perfect but the alternative is much worse. The same applies to our free press.
