THE tragedy in Queen Street suggests to me that the following safeguards should be pursued.

First, the cleansing department should the possibility of engaging through night

collections during the rush period of the last weeks in December.

Secondly, there should be rigorous medical checks on the drivers of these leviathans, at intervals determined by the Chief Medical Officer.

Thirdly, the Transport Secretary should liase with the manufacturer of these vehicles to investigate the possibility of installing a variation of the "dead man's handle" that has successfully served the railway industry for decades. In this instance the driver collapsed on to the steering wheel.

Such a device could have brought the vehicle to a halt

We cannot wait for the next tragedy to happen. We must be proactive.
