BAD luck dogged Dundee's determined efforts to close the gap on Hamilton at Dens Park.
Bobby Mann had a half chance for the home side when he got on the end of Scott Robertson's cross but Raymond Jellema was well placed to save the effort.
Paul Dixon then rattled the visitors' crossbar after Greg Strong's flick on landed nicely at the full back's left foot midway through the first half.
But against the run of play, Hamilton took the lead on 27 minutes when Paul McLeod headed home from close range after Richard Offiong had flicked on Derek Fleming's left-wing cross.
Andy McLaren was unlucky not to pull Dundee level when he had three headers goalwards in quick succession, the second seeing Jellema pull off a great one-handed save on 39 minutes.
Dundee's pressure eventually told 10 minutes into the second half when Strong poked the ball into the net from close range after McLaren's header fell inside the six yard box.
The final bit of bad luck came in the final minute when McLaren looked certain to score until a stray Hamilton foot got in the way.
