This time of year is perfect for city breaks and weekends away both at home and abroad.

Let's be honest, packing for a weekend break can be tricky - which of us hasn't packed a family-sized suitcase for a two-night holiday? The key is in the planning.

You can’t plan for all eventualities but having a good mix of smart and casual clothing means you won’t be shuffling into a posh restaurant in your trainers.

The golden rule when packing for a weekend trip is to think about what awaits you at your destination. If you’re spending time hiking don’t bother packing heels, similarly if you’re staying in a nice hotel make sure you scrub up well for dinner. Common sense really. Most importantly, if you’re travelling abroad always respect the dress code of that area and take modest clothing if you expect to visit areas of religious or sacred significance.

Making a checklist of essential items always helps jog my memory, so here’s six practical tips to help you with weekend packing.

1. You don’t need five pairs of shoes for a weekend. Be ruthless . You WILL manage with two pairs of shoes. Take a comfortable pair for walking around the city or along a beach and a pair of heels that can be worn in the evening for dinner and drinks. Flat pumps or sandals with an ankle clasp are my favourites as they offer your feet more support than flip flops.

2. Take versatile clothes like cardigans that can be layered and ensure the pieces you bring can be worn together. Always pack a lightweight jacket as storms can appear in the sunniest of places, and never underestimate the comfort of leggings when travelling. Think capsule wardrobe when packing rather than choosing a random selection from your wardrobe.

3. Use the rolling technique when packing. Flatten out a few items of clothing then carefully roll them up together like a sleeping bag. If you have tissue paper place it in between each item to prevent creasing.

4. Investing in reusable compression bags will give you extra luggage space - they are especially useful for chunky knitwear and large jackets. They’re also handy for storing dirty laundry until you get home.

5. Essentials items could include things like a little black dress that can be worn from day to night. Whilst strolling around town, team your dress with tights or leggings, flat shoes and a cover-up like a shirt, cardigan or tailored jacket. Pack relaxed fit jeans that are comfortable for daytime but can also be worn with heels at night. Take a small selection of jewellery to brighten up weekend basics. Jewellery is always easy to pack into shoes or small internal pockets in your suitcase.

6. If you’re travelling by air, try to avoid paying to check in luggage. Taking carry-on luggage means you’ll save money and won’t get lost bag butterflies at the carousel. Small suitcases are now available in a variety of colours and sizes so you don’t have to sacrifice style for functionality.
