Have you heard the news? 90’s fashion is making a comeback. Yes that’s right scrunches, high waisted jeans, the lot.

For 90’s school girls the scrunchie was a wardrobe staple. Problem is we’re all grown up now and scrunchies are having a revival.

So it’s time to take a stance - no one over twelve can get away with sporting a scrunchie (unless you’re Cara Delevigne or a Vivienne Westwood model).  If you have photographic evidence to the contrary I’d love to see it.

So why exactly has the scrunchie announced its comeback? In the summer of 2012 we marvelled as long haired Olympians embraced the colour coordinated scrunchie. For the gymnasts in particular (who single handily kept the scrunchie business alive) it seemed this was a matter of practicality rather than a conscious fashion choice.

Nevertheless a trend was spotted and high street retailers followed suit with everyone from American Apparel to luxury label Marc Jacobs producing their own versions. Celebrity ambassadors of the scrunchie include Hilary Clinton and Catherine Zeta Jones although neither is particularly noted for their credible fashion choices (sorry ladies).

However, now that cool girl Cara Delevigne is on the scrunchie bandwagon I can guarantee we’ll be spotting them everywhere from the playground to the boardroom.

What’s more, new accessories brand My Crazy Scrunchie has made scrunchies accessible with a little help from Miss Delevigne and model pal Suki Waterhouse who star in a Western-themed promotional video for the brand.

The design duo behind MCS (Laura Fraser and Eu Simo Grijalbo) make scrunchies from their studio in Dalston, London and were recently commissioned by Vivienne Westwood to make a series of scrunchies for her Spring/Summer 2013 show.

In an interview with The Telegraph the designers said "We always compared our scrunchie collections and so one night we decided we should make them ourselves. We want them on the tube, at the football, at a rave, in schools, on Rihanna, at Carnival and on the Queen!"

Despite their enthusiasm I’m still not convinced. These elasticated horrors don’t suit real women, weren’t cool in the 90’s and certainly aren’t cool now. The same can be said for high waisted jeans and dungarees.

If you’re a regular at Claire’s Accessories you’ll undoubtedly love this trend, the rest of us will get on with life in the 21st century and leave you and your elastic donut in peace.
