As Lady Gaga is revealed as the new face of Versace, we discover that there's nothing expermental about it. The genius lies not only in the Gaga coup, but the creative team behind it, which includes a Scot!

The excitement about Lady Gaga's new role as the face of the Versace Spring/Summer 2014 collection began some time ago, with snippets being leaked to fuel our fire and today with the official announcement being released that Gaga is indeed the face of the new Spring Summer 2014 campaign, we salute Donatella.

Another perfect combo concept from Donatella; always working with distinctive, inspirational and sought after talent. But for me it's not all about Gaga. It's about the much sought after creative teams behind these global campaigns that are seriously impressive and none more so than the stylist from Kirkintilloch, Glasgow would you believe - Joe McKenna.

Perhaps you're not that familiar with the McKenna name but Joe is without a doubt one of the most influential stylists of all time. Starting out with the Face Magazine in London, McKenna moved to New York in 1986 and began an impressive list of collaborations with Calvin Klein and Bruce Weber with his styling literally defining a generation.

There are few brands that McKenna hasn't styled for. He's worked with Ermenegildo Zegna, Giorgio Armani, Jil Sander, Gap Back to Blue Campaign, McQ, Balmain, Azzedine Alaia, Victoria Beckham's SS 14 show and on and on and on and glossy covers that are way to many to mention in one feature.

He scooped 'Scottish Communicator of the Year 2010' at the Scottish Fashion Awards and continues to break new ground with his inimitable styling. But unlike quite a few people in fashion, McKenna is a gent, (wouldn't suffer fools one might say) and a workhorse, but genuinely a lovely chappy, which is rather refreshing in this business I can tell you!

So Donatella ticked the right box for the styling and then locked down the creative seal of excellence with her choice of snappers!

Shot in London by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, these guys are a power duo in the world of photography. Interestingly they couldn't be more opposite. Mert is pretty short and eccentric whilst Marcus is tall and more refined. Having worked together since 1995, the aptly nicked named 'Mert & Marcus' were soon producing impressive work for Dazed & Confused and literally took the fashion world by storm.

Countless covers for Vogue, W Magazine, Love, Vanity Fair and campaigns for Gucci, Givenchy, Sonia Rykiel, Stella McCartney and Giorgio Armani. Already a firm favouite in the book of  Donatella having already shot previous campaigns for Versace Fall Winter 2011, 2012 and 2013 along with the Spring Summer 2012 and 2013 and now the Lady Gaga campaign gracing the global stores and magazines.

Next up steps the 'Godfather' of hair, aptly name by Vogue, New York based Garren. Considered to be one of the most influential hairstylists of our time, Garren is the man in the know and the industry's most trusted hair stylist for celebrities, ad campaigns, editorials and superstars.

With over 1000 magazine covers to his credit, he has a transformational ability that attracts the big fish such as Madonna, Gaga, Katy Perry, Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson and Nicole Kidman to name but a few.

Finally we come to the make-up from none other than Lucia Pieroni. Despite the seriously Italian sounding name, Pieroni speaks with a very thick British accent and was born in England but her dexterous make up artistry stands her apart from her peers.  From runway shows to ad campaigns, celebrities and editorials Lucia is the 'go-to' artist that many flock to, including Donatella.

So finally, we come to Gaga and I'm not gonna lie. I'm a big fan. I'll take a bit of the Gaga cake anytime before slicing the Cyrus. And what a clever orchestration they did with the news. The past few weeks drip feed media campaign was enough to raise the 'is she, isn't she the face of Versace' to fever pitch. Then in a stroke of red carpet mastery, Gaga cleverly wore one of the new Versace dresses at the American Music Awards last night, as she arrived in an animatronics white charger, which was part horse of Troy (and part boy). Some hours later, the world's fashion desks are emailed the official release and the striking new looks from the campaign.

The imagery features a divine Gaga, reclining on luxurious furniture, her long hair 'Versacesque' platinum blonde, with that fearless glare. Other imagery features Gaga and the iconic Signature bag, refreshed in new colours and enhanced by a silver chain on its shoulder strap and the hotly anticipated Palazzo bag which was introduced a the Spring/Summer 2014 show. It's powerful in print and will no doubt do its job for Donatella.

"I am honoured that my friend Lady Gaga is the face of our new Versace campaign. I wanted to capture her true beauty and spirit in images that are elegant and alluring. She is like family to me, the embodiment of the Versace DNA," said Donatella. But my dear Lady, this isn't just experimental, as Gaga likes to play it. This is very clever strategy that's ticked all the creative boxes and the fact that my friend and fellow Scotsman Joe McKenna is within the 'family', it's most definitely another victory for Versace! Brava Donatella, ben fatto!
