Tessa Hartmann, founder of the Scottish Fashion Awards, calls on HeraldScotland readers to help choose a worthy winner for this year's Fashion Icon prize.

Tali Lennox, Emile Sande, Calvin Harris, Tammy Kane and Hollywood stars Gerard Butler and Tilda Swinton are among the nominees for ‘Scottish Fashion Icon 2012’.

You’ve got to hand it to us Scots, it’s a pretty neat list. The shortlist highlights a taste of Scotland’s most fashionable players hailing from film, entertainment, music and fashion, who are making waves on the red carpet with their own inimitable style. We just love this category at Scottish Fashion Awards HQ, as it’s designed as a bit of fun to get the public involved. The rest of the judging is a very serious business carried out by our esteemed panel, but with this category Scotland can get involved and vote for their favourite and most stylish fashion icon – plus it always brings surprises.

For me, style isn’t just about the end look or the cost or the brand that you’re wearing, it’s about how you carry yourself, how you put it together and if you can pull it off.

This year we have an eclectic mix, from Hollywood names like Gerard Butler and Tilda Swinton to rising star Louise Linton, who quite literally took everyone’s breath away last year on our red carpet wearing Ralph Lauren couture.

Then we have the edgy musicians like Barrie -James O’Neill, Emile Sande and Calvin Harris, who simply from their success through their art forms become intrinsically stylish and uber cool. People respond to them, and want to emulate them not just for what they are wearing but because they admire their art and therefore their look.

We also have Tammy, Chris Kane’s sister and muse who just throws an effortless, individual style together, nothing contrived. Of course with that wardrobe access, who wouldn’t!

Also for the first time we have a nominee in two categories, Tali Lennox. We couldn’t leave her out, as she’s as stylish off the catwalk at fashion parties as she is on it.

Her ‘out and about’ individual style is almost as exciting as her catwalk look and is the talk for fashion diary columnists, so just had to be in there. New names to the fold are Iain De Caestecker and Emun Elliot who are rising stars of television and film and handsome Scotsmen too.

My ambition is to get these lads into a fashion shoot wearing Walker Slater bespoke suits, or Harris Tweed waistcoats and crisp white shirts - I love their rugged looks, complemented by their enviable careers and ability, they represent the ideal gents that top fashion brands would want to dress! (Take note Mr. Fashion brands and remember where you heard it first…).
