The Forth Inn

Main Street

Aberfoyle

What is it: A large two-storey building with a slightly sloping roof, it sits proudly on Aberfoyle's Main Street. As well as the restaurant area and function areas there is The Wallace Bar, where of course is where I spent most of my time. It's a cosy, rustic village pub with exposed brick, stone floors, authentic pub furniture and loads of old local pictures of the local area.

Interesting fact: The bar is named after a Ms Wallace who worked in the Forth Inn for around 30 years. They loved her so much they renamed the bar after her. I'm told she still comes in on a Wednesday.

Verdict: After a tough time with some major flooding a few years back, The Forth Inn has dried itself off and got on with what it does best: good food and drink with a big side portion of Scottish hospitality. This part of Scotland is stunning and it's great to see a bar and restaurant offering locally sourced food and drink.

Drink: Good whisky selection, and they really champion Scottish ales with several on pull tap. I enjoyed a pint of Ossian from the Inveralmond Brewery.

Food: Great selection of local dishes, I had to go for their "famous" Forth Inn steak pie with meat supplied from the local Aberfoyle butcher. A good choice at £10.95.

Price: Good enough to keep locals and tourists happy

Alfresco: Fantastic seating area out the front.

Children: There were quite a few families enjoying themselves on my visit. Staff are attentive and well trained and nothing was a problem for them.

Avoid if: You prefer city centre cocktail bars.

Perfect for: Going for a long weekend walk then finishing off here for some great food and drink.
