Ox184

184 Cowgate

Edinburgh

What is it: The fourth venue from Edinburgh pub chain Fuller Thomson (who also own Holyrood 9A, the Southern and Red Squirrel), Ox184 has an open-plan layout with a contemporary, industrial feel: exposed steel beams, concrete bar front and rustic, communal tables. Large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the place with natural light.

Interesting fact: The name "Cowgate" derives from the area's use as an old Drovers' route when farmers led their cattle to the nearby Grassmarket for sale.

Verdict: A great addition to the Cowgate. I really like the industrial, open feel, although I imagine if it was quiet it might feel a bit sparse. The offering is strong here. I just hope they stick to their guns and don't let the standards drop.

Drink: There are around 80 whiskies and 80 gins, rums, vodkas, liqueurs from all over the world but also a big focus on Scotland. They sell the popular bartender drink from America, the pickleback, which is a shot of rye or bourbon followed by a shot of pickling brine. Sounds nasty but it's actually pretty good. There's also a strong beer offering with 13 on tap and 24 canned beers includes four ales brewed specially for Ox184 by Tempest Brewery.

Food: Another celebration of all things meat. The menu is available from 11am until 2.30am. I wish more places did late-night eating. I really enjoyed the Pork & Lobster served in brioche (£14).

Price: Pretty reasonable but not really aimed at students, who are in their abundance in this part of town.

Alfresco: I couldn't see any outside area on my visit.

Children: Unfortunately no licence for kids, although some folks see this as a positive.

Avoid if: You prefer cosy wee pubs

Perfect for: Late-night eats with some good whisky on the side.
