Pop Up West

Pop Up West

160 Woodlands Road

Glasgow

What is it: It's a brave thing to change the name of this place from The Halt. The iconic pub was first opened here over 35 years ago and there has been a pub on this site since 1875. In saying that its heyday had passed and if anyone has the right to change the name and rejuvenate the venue it's the owner of West beer, Petra and her team. With some minor changes to the inside, Pop Up West has been trading since July ahead of a planned huge refurbishment before Christmas this year.

Interesting fact: The Reinheitsgebot (literally meaning "purity order"), or the German Beer Purity Law is something that the team at West stand by when producing all their beers. In the original text, the only ingredients that could be used in the production of beer were water, barley and hops.

Verdict: This is a much-welcome addition to Woodlands Road. The West team have set the standard high with their east end venue and I know for sure they will not disappoint here. Plans for a kitchen downstairs means you will be getting some of that delicious schnitzel in time for Christmas. They have already made this place more appealing to locals and passers and once they are up and running on full cylinders it is going to be fantastic. I know I will be perching happily on the corner of Woodlands Road for a long time to come.

Drinks: Loads of the usual craft West beer selection here to keep you more than happy. I really enjoyed a West Woodlands Red, a version of their Munich Red lager matured in a whisky cask.

Food: No food yet but it will arrive soon and I can't wait. Price: In keeping with the bars in the area but with a better offering. Pints from £3.50.

Alfresco: Seats and benches out front and great for people-watching.

Children: No kids but that will change with the refurbishment, I imagine.

Avoid if: You were looking for a pint of Tennent's.

Perfect for: Meeting up after work with friends.
