Matilda's, 384 Byres Road, Glasgow

First taste

Opened in April by Ian McMaster (owner and head pastry chef) Matilda's brings a touch and taste of Paris to the west end of Glasgow. With a minimalist and monochrome interior (apart from a colourful boutique style mural on one wall) the focus is firmly on the glass cabinets, baskets and shelves filled with patisserie products and bread. There is limited seating downstairs with additional space upstairs, however even when sitting in, the teas, coffees and patisserie products are served 'take out' style in paper cups and cake trays. There is a decent range of light savoury snacks.

One slice or two?

Well-loved patisserie products are baked each day on the premises including individual tarts (lemon, strawberry, mixed fruit, pear and frangipane…) Paris brest, chocolate eclairs, caramel eclairs and chocolate orange mousse cake. Beautiful individual cheesecakes, billionaire's shortbread (with a clever twist), little squares of nougat, fruit de pate and spectacularly large scones are also there to tempt you. The average price is £2.95.

Critic's choice

Chocolate sponge laced with espresso syrup and layered with pistachio cream, coffee buttercream and thick, truffle-like chocolate ganache makes the opera cake every bit as deliciously decadent as it sounds.
