Where is it?
Giffnock is a well-heeled suburb on the south side of Glasgow, distinguished by its amiable village feel, leafy streets and upmarket supermarkets. A short hop along the M77 if you are coming from Glasgow or East Kilbride, it’s within easy reach of the main roads and a railway station provides regular services into the city. It’s located within the much sought-after residential hotspot of East Renfrewshire.
What’s going on?
Plenty. Just as neighbouring Shawlands became the affordable, trendier alternative to the west end and a bustling student hub, Giffnock shook off its old fuddy-duddy image to reinvent itself as a dynamic business and family district with a diverse social scene, high-end retailers and well-regarded schooling. Pockets
of shops dot along the main thoroughfares of Fenwick and Kilmarnock Roads, providing everything from bespoke tailoring and delicious deli food to beauty boutiques and contemporary clothing. It’s also home to Wholefoods, much-lauded US supermarket and assorted cafés and restaurants.
Places to eat?
So, so many – but a real favourite is friendly Italian Andiamo, a small but perfectly formed neighbourhood restaurant serving up delightful pasta, pizza and more.
Cultural highlight?
Nearby Eastwood Theatre, in beautiful Eastwood Park, has a varied programme of music and theatre on the go all year. Highlights of the autumn season include Theatre Guild Glasgow’s production of Sunshine on Leith, the brilliant musical tale based on songs of The Proclaimers (October 11-15, tickets from £14.50, www.eastwoodparktheatre.co.uk)
