Shiny, glittering objects bring out the magpie in all of us.

We desire them, we covet them and (if we can afford to) we buy them and bring them home to our nest to admire.

Golden objects hold a special place in our hearts. We view them as signs of wealth and prosperity – though sometimes we just like the way they sparkle in the light.

This year, the Olympic year, gold is of particular significance. In July it will stand for champions and physical strength. Above all though it will represent achievement.

Fashion has been quick to jump on the golden bandwagon. Shoes, skirts, dresses and costume jewellery have all been given the gilt treatment this season.
