Pulverised by politicians? Sick of the spin? Polled beyond the point of sanity?

 As a survival guide for the next few weeks and the aftermath of the indyref, ANNE DEVLIN has compiled a list of 50 fun things to do across Scotland during the rest of 2014 where we can guarantee - almost - that politics won't be on the agenda.                                             

  1. For many, Glasgow conjures up images of art nouveau architecture thanks to one man, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Every big city has their renowned architect and Glasgow has Mackintosh. While his work has been celebrated over and over again around Glasgow, the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery in the west end aims to present his work in a larger context with the Mackintosh Architecture exhibition. This huge exhibit offers over 80 architectural drawings, never before seen material and commissioned films and models. Open now until 31 December.

  2. If modern art is your thing then so is Scotland's most visited modern art gallery, GoMA, situated in the heart of Glasgow's Royal Exchange Square. With several exhibits on show, there will definitely be something interesting to see. For example why not Glasgow School of Art graduate Douglas Gordon's Pretty Much Every Film and Video Work From About 1992 Until Now? With a title like that, surely everyone will find something to enjoy in this 'visual and aural feast' displayed on over 100 televisions. Open now until 28 September.

  3. Continuing with the art exhibits, the Hunterian Museum and Art gallery is also playing host to Turner Prize-nominee Lucy Skaer. For free admission, you can work your way around four key installation pieces: a drawing, a 16mm film, and two wooden sculptures.  This exhibit is part of a wider series GENERATION, tracing Scotland's artistic landscape over the past 25 years. The Lucy Skaer exhibition is on until 25 January.

  4. You might remember that Glasgow recently hosted a sporting event called the Commonwealth Games. Well, what the games has to offer didn't end at the closing ceremony. The Lighthouse centre of Design and Architecture is showcasing Green2014: The Environmental Legacy of the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a unique but important look at the Games' lasting legacy on our landscape with numerous events and exhibits to experience and learn from. Open until 24 October, there is still plenty to gain from the Games.

  5. Unfortunately, Brad Pitt isn't returning to Glasgow anytime soon after he was attacked by zombies filming World War Z in George Square. However, an art exhibition in his name will be. The Aniara Omann: Brad Pitt Exhibition isn't quite a shrine to the Hollywood star but rather a look into the world of film-prop fabrication as Omann plays with prosthetics, adding them to a series of different objects to present a variety of contexts. The exhibition will run from 22 August until 5 September with free admission at the CCA.

  6. Not to be confused with Channel 4's 10'O Clock Live, Glasgow's popular independent bar Vespbar will play host to The 10'O Clock Show every Friday and Saturday from 22August. MCs such as Susie McCabe will present a mix of comedy acts including one bigger name headline act every night. Booking in advance is recommended for this popular night.

  7. 80's favourite Dirty Dancing is coming to Glasgow's stage at the Kings Theatre. Featuring all of the hits, any fan won't want to miss this live performance; you can have the time of your life. If your date is called Baby, it's probably best not to buy a corner seat. 26August until 20 September.

  8. Coming from London's West End, 1984 will be at the Citizens Theatre for a one week run. In a period of paranoia with the likes of the NSA, it's a particularly poignant time for George Orwell's dystopian classic perhaps explaining its popularity. Showings from 29 August until 6 September.

  9. A film festival with a fat heavy twist, Lanarkshire's Deep Fried Film Festival screens an array of independent films for good causes across Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Kilmarnock and Romanno Bridge. In its ninth year running, the screenings will take place from 30 August until 6 September for £5 a session, cheaper than a portion of fish and chips these days.

  10. The festival season is not quite over yet with Hebtember2014 still to come. A beautiful way to end the summer, the whole of September sees the Outer Hebrides present their culture festival with a wide selection of music, comedy and art events running from the 1 until the 29 September. With performances from the likes of Julie Fowlis, Fred MacAuley and Christine Primrose it isn't too late for a trip to the islands.

  11. If the thought of autumn fills you with dread of woolly jumpers and cold feet, don't panic as there will still be plenty to enjoy. The months of September and October will see Highland Homecoming, a celebration of all things northern in and around Inverness. Opening with the World Sheepdog Trials at Fearn Farm near Tain and followed by the likes of the Highland Military Taboo and the Royal National Mòd, anyone can experience contemporary Highland culture as well as the stunning landscapes. You can even pretend you're Daniel Craig at the end of Skyfall.

  12. The Hard Rock Cafe at the centre of Glasgow will host the city's own indie rock trio Suspire's LP Launch. Having gained momentum as an independently represented band, Suspire are known for their hands on approach to their synth-pop style.  Free admission means anyone can go along to check them out. 3 September.

  13. The SECC will see The Pet Shop Boys perform their critically praised Electric Tour as a one-off Scottish date. The duo will bring their own brand of pop power for a truly electric performance. 5 September.

  14. Museums aren't just for exhibitions as Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum highlights with Music at the Museum, two evening performances at the gallery conducted by Jaime Martín. The beautiful venue will play host to renditions of Rossini, Puccini, Bizet, Verdi, Kodály, Mascagni and Tchaikovsky, with guest soprano Ailish Tynan. 5 and 6 September.

  15. If you're a fan of Dundee cake then the Dundee Flower and Food Festival will be perfect for you. Stretched out over three days, the festival hosts a variety of events with renowned chefs and gardeners including Nick Nairn and Jim McColl as well as the coveted Dundee cake competition and World Jampionships. Whether going as a spectator or serious competitor, the festival offers a day out for the family. 5 until 7 September.

  16. Known for her vibrant prints focussing on the human body, Scottish printmaker Ashley Cook will take over the ground floor of the Glasgow Print Studio for a showcase of her vast body of work. With free admission there is no excuse to not go and marvel at her imagery in her seventh exhibition. 5until 28 September.

  17. A big event every year, the world famous Braemar Gathering will get under way this September as usual. The most famous Highland Games of them all, the event showcases all things Highlands with pipe bands, caber tossing, dancing and great food. You just have to remember and bring your rain jacket...just in case. 6 September.

  18. The most psychedelic event around, Glasgow Psych Fest 2014 boasts a selection of trippy bands over two venues. In its second year running, the event will be held at the Afro Caribbean Centre and the 13th note. Performances to take you to another referendum-free dimension include Trembling Bells, Tut Vu Vu, The Beatroots and many more. 6 September.

  19. Head to the bonnie bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond this September for a feast of tasty delights at the Loch Lomond Food and Drink Festival. Delve into World War II with a war-themed cookery demo or get tips from Great British Bake Off's own James Morton, either way you can be doing all this and more in the most picturesque of settings. 6 and 7 September.

  20. Comic fans of Scotland can rejoice in the news that MCM Scotland Comic Con will be open over two days this year at the Glasgow SECC. The huge event will offer a wide range of activities on the main stage and throughout the numerous stalls. Special guests include Game of Thrones star James Cosmo and up and coming Anime director Shingo Natsume. Cosplay costumes are more than welcomed so get creative!  6 and 7 September.

  21. A battle of the bands contest with a hard edge, Highway to Hell 5 brings to the stage the best of rising hard rock and metal talents. The last 20 acts will play over the weekend for the coveted record deal and touring spots. Taking place at Glasgow's Classic Grand Rock club, it's sure to be unmissable for any devoted rock fan. 6 and 7 September.

  22. After a 22 year gap the Scottish Airshow has finally been revived. Following the popularity of the Red Arrows at the Commonwealth Opening Ceremony, the Airshow can fill that void offering air performances from acts like the Blades aerobatic team consisting of all ex Red Arrow pilots.  On Saturday the fair and airshow will take place at Ayr's Low Green and Sunday's proceedings of the static aircraft event will be at Prestwick Glasgow airport. 6 and 7 September.

  23. It's still not too late in the summer to get out and get active and Freshnlo's Pedal for Scotland Glasgow to Edinburgh might be the perfect end of summer challenge. At 47 miles, it's no easy ride but with 7500 participants last year it's increasingly popular. Departing from Glasgow Green at 7.30am, the 47 mile challenge includes a mix of closed roads, cycle paths and back roads for safety. It's one way to get between Scotland's two largest cities. 7 September.

  24. Glasgow's infamous venue The Arches has hosted many popular club nights over the years and ShangriLa is no exception. Kicking off another year running, ShanriLa: Year II returns to Glasgow's Wednesday nights with a barrage of cheap drinks and great DJs. Promising to never bore, the club night makes its return in time for the students' own one. Every Wednesday from 10 September.

  25. By September you might be having the Fringe blues but don't worry, The Stand Comedy Club is making sure we are entertained. BBC Comedy Presents...is coming to Glasgow to showcase the very new in comedy with quickfire performances from fresh talents for one cheap evening out. 10 September.

  26. Founded in 1980 the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra has continued to perform around the world, promoting orchestral fiddle music and the natural joy of the style. This 150-person strong Scottish experience is returning to Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall this September. 13 September.

  27. Rounding off a great summer for open-air music events, BBC Proms in the Park returns to Glasgow Green as part of the BBC's Late Night of the Proms events. With Katherine Jenkins as the headline act and celebrated performers such as Noah Stewart and Red Hot Chilli Pippers joining, this is set to be one of the classiest evenings around. 13 September.

  28. Knockhill's Racing Circuit is host to numerous events all year round including The Scottish Championship Car Racing. This is a must for any car fanatic and a perfectly fuelled day out for the family. The two final races take place on 14 September and 5 October.

  29. As previously mentioned, cycling is a fantastic sport to make into a day out. There are numerous cycling events around the country including Pedal for Scotland's Aberdeen Ride. With a brand new route, the ride begins in the beautifully refurbished Duthie Park, following a traffic-free route. Being free to enter, fun and safe, there is really no excuse not to get your bike shorts out. 14 September.

  30. Scots are famous for enjoying a drink so it's no surprise that Craft Beer Rising Festival is coming to Scotland for the first time. Based out of Drygate Brewing Co., in Glasgow, the three day event serves up more than 200 craft beers to try. Along with street food and live music, the festival is sure to be a success. If you can survive the hangover, there are four sessions available over the weekend. 19 until 21 September.

  31. If you ask most people what reminds them of Glasgow you might find the TV show Still Game to be a popular answer. The hit BBC show announced its live return Still Game Live at the Hydro with numerous performance dates throughout the autumn. Selling out fast, any fan of the show or newcomer will enjoy the atmosphere and return of the ensemble cast. 19 September until 10 October.

  32. Hamlet at the theatre definitely isn't a rarity but that doesn't mean it isn't still watchable. Shakespeare's classic is undergoing another adaptation, this time from director Dominic Hill for the Citizens Theatre. With An Afternoon with the Dane pre-matinee question and answer session also available on the 27 September, this adaptation promises to be an intriguing one. 19 September until 11 October.

  33. As a part of the Scottish Ensemble's 2014 residency at Dundee's Caird Hall, soloists separate from the Ensemble for an evening to perform three of Vivaldi's concertos in Scottish Ensemble: Essential Ensemble. 20 September.

  34. The hottest festival around has to be Perth's The Awesome Scottish Braves Chilli Fest. If you have a delicate palette then it's best to avoid this one as everything at the chilli festival promises to be packed full of the hot stuff. The highlight of the weekend will surely be the "Clash of the Titans" chilli eating contest. Something only for the brave. 20and 21September.

  35. Promising to be more than just a vintage fair, Glasgow's The Beatroot and Lace Bazaar has a unique name to match the unique events on offer. Spread out over The Art School and The Record Factory and various different dates, the fair offers all things artisan, creative and vintage. With live acoustic sets and great venues, it's more than just a shopping trip. Various dates from 20 September until 20 December.

  36. Another one of Pedal for Scotland's days is Pedal for Scotland with Danny MacAskill 'Drop and Roll'. A 4 mile trip around Glasgow is accompanied by a cycling-based show at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome featuring Danny MacAskill's new 'Drop and Roll' show. 21 September.

  37. In anticipation of the famous Ryder Cup's return to Scotland, the Hydro is putting on an extravagant show, The Ryder Cup Gala Opening. While there will be no golf to speak of at the event, attendees will be audience to performances from Jake Bugg, Nile Rodgers, Texas, Amy Macdonald, Twin Atlantic, Nina Nesbitt, Eddi Reader and Midge Ure as well as collaborations with talent from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera and the National Theatre of Scotland. Select acts will be performing unique performances with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. 24 September.

  38. Now for the actual golf. The biennial Ryder Cup has returned to the 'home of golf; its home being the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire until the 28 September. Team Europe and Team United States will battle it out for the coveted trophy surrounded by the ideal Scottish landscape. 23 until 28 September.

  39. Any Jazz fan will be excited to know that jazz saxophonist and composer Bob Mintzer will be touring with a string of Scottish dates in Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow as The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra + Bob Mintzer. Mintzer will be bringing the essence and music of favourite contemporary jazz band The Yellowjacks to Scotland. 26 until 28 September.

  40. While Glasgow does have a football obsession it's good to remember there are other sports out there including the increasingly popular basketball. Glasgow's only professional team Glasgow Rocks has a selection of games coming up including their match against the Bristol Flyers at the Emirates Sports Arena. The team have been going strong for 12 years now and show no signs of stopping. 28 September.

  41. Bringing the filmography of Africa to Scotland, Africa in Motion film festival is now in its ninth year, still aiming to overcome the under-representation of African film in British culture. Screened in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, this film festival is one of a kind in Scotland. October and November.

  42. For all things Americana head to Glasgow Americana, the most comprehensive Glasgow-based festival for blues, country and folk. Various venues across the city will play host to a wide selection of American and Canadian artists bringing their big country vibes such as Matt Anderson and Sturgill Simpson. 1 until 5 October.

  43. When thinking of Oktoberfest your mind may wander to Munich and pretzels but not anymore! Edinburgh's Princes Street and Glasgow's Green will put on their very own Oktoberfests, mimicking the Bavarian landscape. Get your lederhosen and dirndl dresses ready. Princes Street 1until 12 October, Glasgow Green 16 until 26October.

  44. When it comes to porridge there is one place that takes it very seriously. In the heart of the Cairngorm National Park you'll find Carr Bridge, home to the World Porridge Championships. 2014 sees The 21st Annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship. Initially started to promote the health benefits of porridge, the competition has developed into a big event with celebrity judges and big sponsors. For a very Scottish day out, head to the highlands. 4 October.

  45. If porridge isn't your thing you might fancy something a little stronger. That's where Glasgow GinFest comes in. A celebration of the beverage, the evening promises to be an entertaining one. Hosted by the Barras Art and Design centre, the festival will present a huge selection of gins to try accompanied by live music. 4 October.

  46. For the first time the Granite City will showcase its very own film festival this year. At The Aberdeen Film Festival, the city's various cinemas will screen an array of films and the world famous "48 Film Project" will get into full swing challenging contenders to produce a masterpiece in just two days. 4 until 12 October.

  47. A more hands on approach to Mackintosh than anything before, The Creative Mackintosh Festival is a brand new festival aiming to celebrate the architectural genius of Mackintosh through workshops and activities. Walking tours and exhibitions all add up to promote his very Glasgow style. 10 until 26 October.

  48. Possibly the most beautiful jog you can ever experience, Race the Castles offers various courses for runners to compete in. The open races are sprint, distance and urban courses with routes disclosed at the start line. The elite race will showcase a multinational invited set of runners. A variety of races of varying levels at Edinburgh, Stirling, Crathes and Balmoral. 11 until 19 October.

  49. For the first time since 2003 one of the biggest nights in Europe's music calendar is coming to Scotland. Glasgow's Hydro will be host to The 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards. The awards are infamous for their controversial moments like Miley Cyrus' appearance last year so let's wait and see what happens in Glasgow this time. 9 November.

  50. Bringing its own unique brand of action entertainment, WWE Live is returning to the UK at Glasgow's Hydro. To see all the big stars in their huge flesh, get down to the Hydro for all the atmosphere and drama. 13 November.
