We all know the saying ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’.

Deep down we know it's true, but we still tend to forget breakfast until we are absolutely ravenous!

Many of us find ourselves running out the door in the morning with no time to sit down and eat a filling breakfast. The least we might do is grab an overpriced coffee and biscuit at the local coffee shop, garage or drive-thru! However, if you're looking to change your morning routine and make it just a bit healthier, smoothies give you the boost you're looking for.

You can pack a whole lot of vitamins and nutrients into a breakfast smoothie. Use a base of milk, soy milk, silken tofu or yogurt to ensure a good serving of protein then vary the ingredients to create your favorite flavour.

This recipe gives you great ideas for making smoothies at home (there's no need to pay top end for a smoothie at the juicebar). Try banana, pineapple, berries or even vegetables or how about mango, strawberry, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, flax seed oil (for omegas) and evening primrose oil (for anti-inflammatory properties). If you run out of bananas, use blueberries or mango.

You'll see that whizzing together a smoothie in the morning is not difficult at all. It's quick, easy and perfect for an on-the-go lifestyle. It’ll also give you tons of vitamins, anti-oxidants and yummy goodness and it’s one for all the family to have as they are racing out the door!

Making smoothies is also a way of using fruit that is passed its best. As soon as any fruit starts to speckle or wrinkle just chuck it, peeled or skinned, in the freezer and, when you need it you can pop it in the blender with your yoghurt, seeds and milk and make a great smoothie.

Breakfast smoothie

Half a glass of milk

Half a glass of low fat, fat free or full fat plain yoghurt (your choice)

1 handful of frozen banana

1 teaspoon of honey(runny or set is fine)

1 handful of frozen berries

1 teaspoon of seeds(any you have)

1 In a blender, blend the milk, yogurt, banana, seeds, honey and berries until smooth.

2 Pour the mixture back into the cup and serve. You will feel so much better for it!
