Summer Isles Hotel

Achiltibuie

Ross-shire

What is it: It's described as an oasis of civilisation within the ruggedly beautiful, wild and untouched landscape of the western Scottish Highlands and I have to agree. The Summer Isles Hotel is hidden away in the village of Achiltibuie, some 10 miles north west of Ullapool. It's a stunning spot with amazing views south-west over the Summer Isles. At the side of the hotel you will find The Summer Isles Bar - the original crofters' bar dating back to the mid-19th century. The hotel was bought by Mark and Gerry Irvine in 1986 from Mark's father. They expanded the business, won awards for the improved accommodation and service, and gained a Michelin Star for the restaurant food in 1998. They sold the hotel to current owners, Terry and Irina Mackay, in 2008. I spent my time in the tiny bar which is open all day serving fresh ground coffee and snacks, lunch and evening meals in an cosy setting.

Interesting fact: The Summer Isles acquired that name because that was where the local crofters used to transport their sheep for summer grazing. The largest island, Tanera Mor, now has a tiny permanent population but in the 19th century it supported over 100 inhabitants.

Verdict: Quaint and welcoming with friendly, attentive staff. Well worth the journey.

Drink: A good selection of ales and single malts. I very much enjoyed an Aberfeldy 12-year-old.

Food: Scallops, lobsters, crabs, langoustines, halibut, turbot, salmon and venison are all sourced locally. I had the Scottish fish pie with seasonal vegetables for £12.95 from the bar menu. The restaurant menu looks a lot more formal.

Price: Reasonable and well worth the trek to get here.

Alfresco: Great outside area with lovely views.

Children: Kid-friendly.

Perfect for: A weekend away to escape the city life and experience some proper Scottish hospitality.

Avoid if: You fancied a trip here between October and April as the hotel closes during these months.
