Dean McAdam's verdict: 5 stars

Born in Sunderland but raised in Scotland, this is a homecoming of sorts for Emeli Sande. Perhaps unfairly left out from the Glastonbury line-up, Sande responds in kind with a blistering performance on the main stage.

Having performed in both the opening and olosing ceremonies for the London 2012 Olympics, this was unlikely to be a stage that would overawe the 26-year-old.

This expectation was realised with a performance of power, enthusiasm and genuine soul.

Sande proved her degree of talent by performing admirably on the piano on both Daddy and Clown. Both numbers enhanced her crystal clear, all-encompassing vocals, performed with a rare passion and soul.

Establishing a real rapport with the crowd, Sande cut an animated figure, showing boundless energy by constantly drifting around the stage, expressing real freedom and confidence.

Read All About It, a clear crowd-favourite, was sung with real gusto and passion from the Brit, with the audience singing the entire chorus line whilst Sande took a rather well-earned break.

My Kind of Love was another example of Sande feeding off the crowd's support to produce a true powerhouse performance that was undoubtedly the highlight of a strong set.

Whilst Lifted was a rare low point, concluding on the popular Next to Me was a masterstroke, leaving the audience searching for more from an undeniably popular and talented vocalist who appears to be going from strength to strength.
