ART, music, performance and installations all come together on Friday when Summerhall, in Edinburgh, launches its Festival of Ian Smith: a Celebration of Death. Smith, who co-founded and directed Mischief La-Bas, the Glasgow-based purveyors of quality mayhem and left-field larks, took his own life in 2014. His work and his memory not only live on in this festival, they are the inspiration for events that question how our society responds to death and the loss of loved ones.

Across the opening weekend, events such as the Death Cafe, and a Day of the Dead Party, will acknowledge how other cultures engage with mortality while exhibitions and performances – including Pauline Goldsmith’s Bright Colours Only – will embrace remembrance as a vital part of everyday life.
