EDINBURGH-based rock, funk and soul band Gilchrist will go ahead with the release of their new EP, Soul Preacher, On December 16 despite illness causing them to bring live performances to a temporary halt. The band have recently come to the attention of award-winning record producer Steve Power, who has worked with Robbie Williams, McFly, Billy Ocean, Womack & Womack and a host of other artists, and Soul Preacher contains three tracks that were mixed by him. Following the release of their debut album, Funky Philosophy, in November 2014, Soul Preacher is the first of four EPs planned over the next twelve months. EDINBURGH jazz promoters Playtime present their final session of 2016 when saxophonist Martin Kershaw and double bassist Andy Sharkey appear at Playtime HQ, the Outhouse in Broughton Street Lane, on Thursday, December 15. An integral figure in the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra’s saxophone section for over a decade, Kershaw, pictured, has also featured with groups including saxophone quartet Brass Jaw and Cannonball Adderley celebrants Mercy Mercy Mercy as well as winning acclaim as a composer for projects including Hero as Riddle, his suite inspired by artist Eduardo Paolozzi. He and Sharkey, whose wide experience includes work with the classical-jazz-folk ensemble New Focus and classic jazz specialists the Nova Scotia Jazz Band, will play duo arrangements of popular jazz standards. The concert begins at 8:00pm.

TEENSTAR, the talent competition exclusively for pre-teens and teenagers, will hold its Scottish audition in Glasgow on Sunday, March 12. Applications are now invited from pre-teen and teenage singers and dancers in the 12 years & under, 13-15 years, and 16-19 years age groups. Groups with dancers in various age categories are also welcome to apply. The competition, whose previous winners include Birdy, Lucy Spraggan and recent X Factor contestant Emily Middlemas, has a prize pool worth thousands of pounds and offers entrants a chance to feature in the competition’s media partner, teen magazine Shout.
