Keratin treatments are a Godsend for those of us with dry, frizzy hair but they come at a price says Anastasia Shevchenko, who is an expert in the treatment.

She says she's always honest in explaining to clients that while they do leave you with silken locks, they will cause a bit of damage to the hair in the process.

However, it's a price that most people are happy to pay - including her - because the end result is mostly always excellent as her Instagram before and after pictures show.

I was told recently by a hairdresser that my hair is quite badly damaged after years of highlights so I am here to try out a treatment that she says is very popular in her native Ukraine but hasn't quite reached our shores yet.

The Herald:

She says cold restoration is ideal for those of us with a wave or a curl because keratin treatments can straighten this out a bit and best of all it doesn't cause any damage whatsoever to the hair.

She explains the science behind it but in simple terms it is said to strengthen the hair from the inside, depositing proteins in the holes (gasp) in the cortex created by harmful procedures such as bleached highlights.

She tests the strength of my hair after it is washed by pulling some strands and explains that it shouldn't stretch too much. The top layer of my hair is graded 4 (the worst is 5) and the hair underneath which hasn't been highlighted is a 3.

The treatment takes about 2 hours to complete and she says it may increase the wavy texture of my hair because it aims to take your hair back to its natural state.

The Herald:

Don't expect miracles if your locks are badly damaged. After repeating the strength test she says I've dropped one damage grade each in the top layer of my hair and under-section, which I'm pleased about.

Anastacia is a trichologist so she is full of advice for hair welfare and her own is a testament to her expertise with minimal highlights.

She gives me lots of tips on how to shampoo, style and dry my wavy hair for the best results and it feels and looks better than it has in years.
