* FIVE days a week Howard Sammeroff is the suave businessman, but at

weekends his business acquaintances could be forgiven if they did not

recognise him, covered in glaur keeping goal for Yoker Athletic.

At 35, Howard may be a young businessman, but he is a veteran

goalkeeper. His career included two seasons in senior football with

Motherwell during which he was signed by Ally McLeod, played under David

Hay, and was given a free transfer by Jock Wallace.

He also had eight seasons with Pollok, one of Scotland's leading

junior teams.

Today Howard combines his Saturday appearances for Yoker with running

his own import-export business, D.L.Supplies Import Limited, which

involves him having to occasionally let his team mates get on without

him as he jets off on business to the Far East to destinations such as

Hong Kong, Bangkok and Taiwan.

Howard explains: ''I have to visit our suppliers to arrange new

orders, check out new products and make sure that the quality of the

goods is being maintained.''

His company imports haberdashery and fancy goods items, including 18

million drawing pins.

Howard says: ''We have a range of more than 200 products which we sell

to the big cash-and-carry concerns and many of our products end up in

the local corner shop.''

Future business travels could take him to China in search of new

products and he hopes to visit the Canton Trade Fair.

Howard, the goalkeeper, admits: ''I may have to think of retiring at

the end of the season. Yoker have been very good to me. They allow me to

train only one night a week, but my business commitments are increasing

and I also have a young family which I want to spend more time with.''
