Officers went to his home after concerns that Mr McKechnie, who was known as Ryan, had not been seen for around three days.

His body was found inside and an investigation launched.

Initially, police were treating the death as suspicious but the change in the status of inquiry was announced tonight.

A statement issued by officers said: "Police Scotland can now confirm that a murder inquiry is under way into the death of Mr McKechnie. Inquiries are ongoing."

Detectives have been working to establish the full circumstances surrounding Mr McKechnie's death.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Cunningham, from the major investigation team, said earlier: "We are asking anyone who remembers seeing or hearing anything untoward in or around James Street in the past few days to contact police immediately.

"Anyone with any further information relevant to our investigation is also asked to get in touch."

People can contact Police Scotland on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
