Former England and Preston North End footballer Sir Tom Finney is to be honoured with a civic funeral in his home city.

The move follows a social media campaign for Sir Tom to receive the honour on February 27, following his death last week aged 91.

Sir Tom was known as the "Preston Plumber" after completing an apprenticeship with his family's plumbing business. The Preston-born forward made 433 appearances for Preston between 1946 and 1960, and won 76 caps.

The city council announced the plans yesterday for the service at Preston Minster. It will be followed by a private service for his family, the council added. Two books of condolence have been opened.

Council leader Peter Rankin, said: "He is probably the most important Prestonian that has ever lived."
