WORK to improve pedestrian access around Edinburgh's Waverley Station will begin on Monday, just a week after a minister died in a road accident in the area.

Footpaths will be widened and the carriageway resurfaced on Waverley Bridge and Market Street as part of the £1 million scheme. A new zebra crossing will be installed and a 10-bay taxi rank introduced on Market Street. The work comes a week after the death of the Rev Tom Sinclair, who was killed by a car at the station. It is understood one of the factors looked at as part of the police investigation into the crash is a controversial safety barrier.

Councillor Lesley Hinds, Transport Convener at Edinburgh City Council, said: "These improvements will make a big difference."
