The granddaughter of a soldier who enlisted with his brother and died on the same day in the First World War has been given the honour of planting a tree in his memory at a new woodland initiative.
Margaret Murison will dedicate the sapling in the Pentland Hills, near Edinburgh, to her grandfather William and his brother John Balmer, who lost their lives on April 11 1917.
She said: "William and John are buried in France, but it's unlikely that I'll ever be able to visit their graves.
"Dedicating trees to their memory is a wonderful idea, bringing them to life for me more vividly than ever before."
Some 50,000 trees will be planted by the Woodland Trust over four years at four UK sites at a cost £12 million.
