A driver and dog were rescued by firefighters after the car they were in crashed into the side of a house.

The motorist was taken to hospital following the incident in Dalbeattie, Dumfries and Galloway.

Firefighters went to the scene in the town's Southwick Road after a caller reported seeing the car leaking fuel with smoke visible soon after 6pm yesterday.

They used hydraulic rescue equipment to free the motorist and dog.

Crew manager Norman Neilson, the incident commander, said: "When we arrived we found there was one person inside the car as well as a dog.

"Firefighters stabilised the vehicle and took the passenger-side door off to give paramedics access to the casualty.

"We assisted them in extricating the driver, who was then taken to hospital by ambulance. The dog appeared well."
