A 14-year-old boy has been seriously hurt in a crash on a stolen motorbike.

The teenager was thrown off when the BMW bike hit a wall in Edinburgh's Granton area on Saturday night.

He landed on some rocks and is being treated at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary following the incident on West Shore Road at around 11.20pm.

Chief Superintendent Mark Williams said: "This was a terrible incident that has left a local boy badly injured. Thankfully it wasn't more serious as the consequences could have been fatal.

"What it does, sadly, is highlight the risks faced by those who choose to ride stolen motorbikes and demonstrates the impact this can have on both the individual, their families and the community.

"In unqualified hands motorbikes are extremely dangerous and tackling the theft of motorbikes and vehicles will continue to be a focus for local officers."
