A regeneration guru credited with helping thousands of new firms get off the ground is to take up one of the most important jobs at Scotland's second largest council.

Paul Lawrence, who helped new businesses blossom as corporate director at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, has been named as preferred candidate for the role of "executive director - place" for Edinburgh City Council.

The role replaces "director of services for communities", held by Mark Turley before he resigned in the wake of Mortonhall Crematorium scandal when children's ashes were disposed of without their parents' knowledge.

If confirmed, Mr Lawrence would be responsible for the development and delivery of frontline services across the city as part of the role, created under the council’s new organisational structure.

The post is accountable for a range of major council services including travel and transport, housing, planning, waste and recycling and street cleansing.

Andrew Burns, council leader, said: “The calibre of applicant for the role was exceptionally strong and I am certain that we have chosen the right candidate for this new and important position."
