The redundancies at an arts organisation that sparked an uproar on Mull have been suspended.

The board of Comar, the organisation which was formed in 2013 with the merger of An Tobar and Mull Theatre, has been at the centre of controversy after it appeared poised to make key artistic directors Alasdair McCrone and Gordon McLean redundant.

The moves led to the actors union Equity called for the board of Comar to resign "en masse" and a furious town hall meeting in Tobermory which elected a "shadow board" to pressure Comar's existing board.

Now the board of Comar is to advertise for new board members and a new chair, and has said, after a meeting this past weekend, that it is "keen to work with the Shadow Board on this process which will focus on attracting a strong response from Mull, Iona and Argyll."

It has also made a commitment to "suspend any further action on the ongoing redundancies".

This is to " to allow the Comar Board and the Shadow Board to continue a constructive dialogue about how to build a strong, sustainable future for the arts in Mull, Iona and Argyll."

A statement for the board of Comar, which is funded by the Creative Scotland, said: "The Comar Board has appointed Community Enterprise in Scotland to consult with local communities to structure a new membership scheme and to make any necessary recommendations should this require changes to the existing Comar constitution.

"This work will begin immediately.

"The Comar Board has been in touch with the Shadow Board to outline a way forward with regard to the restructuring process....all staff have been briefed about these developments and the Comar Board has committed to ensuring that all further information is shared as openly as possible with staff, the Shadow Board and the wider community."
