GLASGOW city centre ground to a halt as fire broke out in a building connected to Central Station.

Five fire engines were sent to the scene just after 4.30pm yesterday after witnesses reported smoke billowing out of an office on Union Street.

Traffic surrounding the site of the incident was brought to a standstill as flames were spotted coming from four windows within the office complex, which forms part of the station, Scotland’s busiest.

Brian O’Reilly, who works in the offices affected, said: “We could smell smoke around the offices in every room we went to.

“I hit the fire alarm and fire crews were here within five minutes. “The flames are really visible just now.”
A motorist, who got caught in the traffic in Union Street, said: The traffic just stopped.
“There’s absolutely nowhere to go and there was thick smoke billowing out of the building.

“Thankfully it looked like no-one was injured.”

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “Five appliances have been dispatched to the scene.

“There are no reports of casualties.”
