Turkish and Russian officials have agreed to meet for talks over the downing of a Russian warplane, according to Turkey's Foreign Ministry.

Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said in a written statement that foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov had agreed to a meeting "in the coming days".

But Mr Lavrov said during a live TV interview that there were no concrete plans for a meeting. He said he had suggested he and Mr Cavusoglu could meet on the sidelines of some international event, but nothing was confirmed.

Mr Lavrov had earlier described the incident as a "planned provocation".

He said Moscow will reconsider relations with Ankara but did not say what measures Russia would take.

Mr Lavrov added: "We have no intention to go to war with Turkey. Our attitude to the Turkish people hasn't changed. We only have questions about the Turkish leadership."

He also said that advice to Russian citizens to refrain from visiting Turkey issued on Tuesday was based on extremist threats in the country.

Meanwhile, the Turkish embassy in Moscow came under attack by protesters hurling eggs and stones.

Windows at the embassy's compound were shattered and eggs pelted against the walls on Wednesday after a protest there went sour. Police cleared the area and and made some arrests shortly after the protest began.

All the protesters seemed to have left by Wednesday late afternoon.
